Warm temperatures have brought the Flounder out of hiding. We are seeing nice fish of both the Connecticut and New York side of Long Island Sound. Although Sand Eels remain the meal of choice for these flatties, more and more fish are showing up with bellies full of juvenile Scup between 3-4” in length. A white Spro tipped with Sand Eel is our suggestion for success this weekend.
Striped Bass continue their migration East. Solid reports are coming in daily pointing to the night bite as the best time to find big breeder fish. Not much has changed as far as bait selection. Bunker is still your best bet. Bass are certainly lurking everywhere in the sound, in both shallow and deeper, cooler waters.
During the hot summer months, as temperatures increase, oxygen levels in the water decrease. Reeling in Bass from deep water can be an exhausting experience for the fish. As always it’s important to take the time to revive and release large breeders ensuring they have the best chances of survival in the wild.
We are beginning to see nice Black Sea Bass in the mix. Green and Chartreuse are colors that should always be in your tackle bag when targeting these tasty fish. Bait a high-low with fresh clam and you’ll be sure to jig up a few on your drifts this weekend.
